Salida De Campo
Salida De Campo is the Spanish term for field trips or excursions. These kind of trips are generally undertaken by a group of people, usually students, away from the normal environment of their day-to-day lives. It’s also commonly referred to as school trips in Philippines, New Zealand and UK. In Ireland, field trips are called school tours.
If we look at the purpose of field trips, particularly in the context of art students and their learning methodologies, they’re mostly conducted for helping them observe the natural environments of their probable subjects. The students get to observe their possible subjects in their natural environments and natural states. They can even click pictures and collect samples if they need. Furthermore, they get to experience surroundings that are different from their everyday environment. Usually, the students go camping with their classmates and teachers.
In general, field trips are used for producing civilized young women and men who understand and appreciate the role of arts and culture in their overall upbringing. It is generally observed that privileged children normally experience all such cultural institutions outside of their school life too. But field trips provide all the students with a common ground where both the less advantaged and more advantaged students can enjoy the same cultural experiences in the field of art.
These trips are usually carried out in three different steps – preparation, activities and then follow-up activities. The preparation part is applicable to both students as well as the teachers. Teachers take out time for learning about the destination as much as they can, before the D-Day. Activities conducted during the field trips usually include: demonstrations, tours, videos, worksheets and lectures. The follow-up activities involve classroom discussions after the conclusion of the trip.
When it comes to the Western countries, people normally come across the term field trip during their schooling years when their classes are taken on such trips to some place of geographical or geological importance. Some of the popular field trip destinations are community agencies, natural centers, government agencies, science museums, local businesses, hospitals and fire stations.
Not only do such trips offer excellent alternative learning opportunities to children, they can also be beneficial for the community if they involve some kind of community service. These trips also give students a much-needed break from their day-to-day routine, allowing them to experience something which is more hands-on. Destinations like nature centers and zoos usually have interactive displays allowing children to come in direct contact with the animals or plants.
In the end, it cannot be denied that such field trips play an important role in the evolution of both growing up children and grown up art students.
